Come to Farmville, Virginia and take a walk. A nice long, relaxing walk on Virginia's newest state park. The High Bridge Trail State Park is a multi-use trail that is suitable for hiking, biking and horseback riding. The centerpiece of the trail will be the High Bridge which is 160 feet above the Appomattox River and 2400 feet long. The bridge was built in 1853 as part of the South Side Railroad.
The High Bridge Trail State Park runs right thru the middle of Farmville VAand is 30 miles long. It covers a large part of Central Virginia. The park was a rail line that has been coverted to a trail. The trail is finely crushed limestone, is flat and easy for all park goers to use.
Virginia has one of the finest park systems in the nation. Virginia launched their park system in 1936 and was able to open 6 parks, all on the same day on June 15, 1936. We are celebrating our 75th anniversary this year for the park system in Virginia. Now we have 35 state parks and there is at least one park within an hour's drive of any Virginian. The parks are an excellent resource for any Virginian or any one who wants to visit Virginia and have a great place to visit where you can relax, reconnect and get away from it all.
On a recent walk on the park we spotted a small snake, a turtle, a rabbit, a deer. Friends have seen bears and foxes. Beautiful flowers are all along the trail, blackberry bushes , and gorgeous fields and tree-lines. The scenery is amazing. There are several crossings where you are reminded that you are in modern day times. The route crosses or touches route 460 in several places.
