Downtown Farmville Is Awarded the title of Designated Virginia Main Street Community
Farmville is a great place to live.
There is a committed and very active group of volunteers who are part of Downtown Farmville that are excited about change and the future. This group along with the leadership of Gerry Spates, town manager and the assistance of Cindy Morris, as representatives of the Town of Farmville completed a complicated and detailed application for the Designated Virginia Main Street Community application.
This week Governor McDonnell announced that Farmville is one of the four communities chosen for this great designation. In addition to Farmville, Hopewell, Bristol and St. Paul were also chosen. The measuring sticks used to determine winners were need, readiness, community support and appropriateness of their district. Now Virginia has 25 Designated Virginia Main Street Communities.
The Virginia Main Street program will provide technical assistance, training, and expert resources to assist our community with downtown revitalization efforts.
In addition to the application process many members of the community pledged their financial support to the community for the Main Street Designation. The generous individuals and businesses who wrote letters pledging financial support include Amish Originals, Buffalo Creek Guitar Company, Caryn's Bridals, Centra Southside Community Hospital, Citizen's Bank & Trust Co., Farmville Herald, Harlan L. Horton PC, Honeycutt and McGuire PC, J. Fergeson Gallery, Longwood Center for the Visual Arts, Longwood Small Business Development Center, Moton Museum, Northwestern Mutual Financial Network, Pairet's, Prince Edward County, Real Living Cornerstone, Chuck Ross, Sleeping Bee, Mel Smith, Rucker Snead, Sally Thompson, Lacy Ward, Hunter Watson, Bob Winthrop, The Woodland, Yoder Properties.
Downtown Farmville has had many positive changes in the past couple of years. With the momentum in place and the push of this great Main Street Community program Farmville can become a destination and great place to visit for all of Virginia. It is like cheering your favorite team--everyone wants to yell--Go Farmville!
