Carytown - Just One of the Great Locations for a Trip to Richmond about 60 miles from Farmville
I love that my wonderful little home town of Farmville is within 1-1 1/2 hours of three great cities which all have distinct characters.
I previousy blogged about Charlottesville, which lies to the North. The state capitol of Richmond lies to the east and it would take many blogs to cover all the different attractions that await in Richmond.
For a more eclectic taste in shopping and some incredible fine eating Carytown holds a wealth of wonders. Carytown is known for having a more bohemian feel and this is reflected in the shops and the many different styles of food available, mainly along Cary Street.
You will find lots of locally owned, independently run stores which offer items you won't find in all the usual household name stores which populate the shopping malls of every city. You will find clothing ranging from thrift store style, to vintage, and also high end boutique. You will also find toy stores like World of Mirth offering an amazing range of different fun products for kids of all ages. They even have items that will take you back to your own childhood!
The choice of eating establishments is just breathtaking. You can find almost every type of cuisine on offer as you wander along the street. Try the incredible Carytown Sushi, Farouk's House of India, or Stuzzi Pizza to name just a very few of the many choices. There are of course cupcakes, ice cream, frozen yoghurt, and other great desserts to satisfy the sweet tooth. No bohemian downtown would be complete without several options to get your caffeine fix for the day!
There are also many specialist shops covering all kinds of interests and hobbies from music and photography, to cooking and gaming. Along the way you can also check out the dancewear shop or if you like to dress up there is a costume shop with all your make up and accessories needs for a fun Halloween or party.
No trip to Carytown would be complete without checking out the famous Byrd Theatre which was the city's first cinema named for the founder of the city. The theatre is a national and state historic landmark and houses a Wurlitzer organ which is played on Saturday nights. Movies are shown year round, 365 days per year, and are still played on reel-to-reel projectors which have to be changed mid-movie.
Carytown is also home of the annual Carytown Watermelon Festival. With music, vendors, entertainment and lots of watermelon what's not to love?
Take a friend and plan to spend the day in Carytown. Have a great day shopping, eat some delicious food and then take in a movie at the Byrd Theatre before heading back home to Farmville!
